FIND LOVE AGAIN AFTER DIVORCE

January 16th, 2016

Dear Trish,

My divorce is taking forever.  I  feel emotionally ready to move on, but I hate that  I'm not 100% free.  Some women seem hesitant to date someone who is "separated" vs. "single."  I've tried not mentioning my status, but it feels dishonest and not the right way to kick off a potential  new romance.   How do I do this?

Signed,
Almost Divorced and Practically Single

Dear Almost Divorced and Practically Single,

What's the delay with your divorce?  If it's only a legal or practical issue,  and has nothing to do with either you or your ex stalling the ending of your marriage in hopes of patching things up, you  should be fine to date.  Honesty remains the best policy in romance, and a quick disclosure about your "separated" status , including the fact that you have long since emotionally moved on, but the legal process is lagging your emotional recovery, is all it takes.  Realize that some singles won't date someone whose divorce isn't final.  They have that right, and your job is to honor their personal rule on this issue. Plenty of single women and men are willing to date someone separated, often because they are separated themselves, or recently were and understand the divorce process can be frustratingly long. For now, this is your dating pool.  Enjoy the swim!

 Yours,

Trish
